Employees in this role are under general supervision; performs investigations of crimes and accidents, protects property, facilities and citizens through law enforcement techniques; provides escort service; performs related and occasionally other duties as assigned. This officer is assigned to the Meharry campus in Memphis, Tennessee and is scheduled Monday through Friday 0830 hours to 1630 hours. This position is also off duty when the location is closed for holiday or otherwise.

Daily Operations

  • Campus patrol: Responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the building environment by actively monitoring designated areas. This includes conducting regular foot and vehicle patrols, identifying and addressing potential security risks
  • Incident Response: Responds to incidents, including medical emergencies and criminal disturbances, in a timely and efficient manner. This involves assessing the situation, providing immediate support, coordinating with other agencies or units if necessary, and ensuring the safety of all involved
  • Report Generation: Generates detailed and accurate reports related to daily activities, incidents, and operations. Sends daily reports to management staff via email.
  • Customer Service and Public Interaction: Provides exceptional customer service and maintains positive public relations with students, staff, and visitors. The individual is responsible for addressing inquiries, resolving issues, and ensuring a positive experience for all individuals interacting with the department
  • Personal Accountability: Maintains issued gear including, but not limited to, uniforms, equipment and vehicles being utilized. They also maintain themselves and their schedules to be present and physically able to conduct their duties and communicate any personal issues that would inhibit their abilities to their immediate supervisor.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Security Operations: Understanding of campus security protocols, emergency procedures, and safety regulations.
  • Communication Systems: Familiarity with radio communication systems, phone systems, and alarm monitoring technologies.
  • Record-Keeping Practices: Knowledge of proper documentation and log-keeping practices for security-related activities and incidents.
  • Multitasking: Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Effective Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills for clear interaction with supervisors and the public.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to assess situations quickly and make decisions that ensure safety and efficiency.
  • Attention to Detail: Skill in accurately documenting events and monitoring security systems without overlooking critical information.
  • Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks effectively and manage time during fast-paced or high-pressure situations.
  • Crisis Management: Ability to stay calm and think clearly during emergencies or stressful situations, providing accurate instructions and assistance.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to interact with a diverse community, including staff, students, and visitors, with professionalism and courtesy.
  • Adaptability: Ability to adjust to changing situations and priorities, especially in dynamic or emergency situations.
